Life Cycle

Hardy Annual
Zone 5 TreatmentCan plant seedlings 4-6 weeks before last frost. Or, since these are winter hardy down to zone 5, let the seedlings re-seed themselves after they are done blooming under a row cover throughout the winter for early spring blooms.
Seedling CareTransplant within 2 weeks of receiving, otherwise the roots can get too crowded and harm the overall health of the plant.
Netting / StakingOnly if they are in a windy place
Temperature Range They Will Tolerate0-75 degrees F (can survive under a row cover through a zone 5 winter)
Spacing/Height8-9” spacing, 24”-36” height
Soil PreferenceNutrient rich, break up heavy clay soils and amend with compost to allow better root growth
How to cut for maximum bloomsMake the first cut almost to the ground, just above the first 2 or 3 side shoots. The growing energy will then be redirected into the side shoots for more stems and more growth. Harvest anytime after you see tiny yellow flowers. If you cut too early, everything will wilt. You can get about 5-10 stems per plant.
PinchingNo
When to Plant if you are NOT in Zone 54-6 weeks before first frost for blooms the same spring.
Post Harvest CareRoom temp water with flower food. Take off all of the leaves and foliage. Leaves and foliage of any cut flower should never be submerged underwater because they decay quickly in water and cause a fast build up of bacteria.
Diseases / InsectsNot very susceptible to disease or pests, but can become weedy – keep under control and well cut to avoid this annoyance.
Sweet Pea’s NotesGreat filler flower for spring bouquets. Personally, I like leaving the blooms intact even after they are spent to harvest for dried uses later.
