Life Cycle | Annual |
Zone 5 Treatment | Plant seedlings AFTER the last frost |
Seedling Care | Transplant within 2 weeks of receiving otherwise the roots can get too crowded and harm the overall health of the plant. |
Netting / Staking | No |
Temperature Range They Will Tolerate | 45-95 degrees F |
Spacing/Height | 6” spacing24” height |
Soil Preference | Nutrient rich, break up heavy clay soils and amend with compost to allow better root potential |
How to cut for maximum blooms | Make the first cut almost to the ground, just above the first 2 or 3 side shoots. The growing energy will then be redirected into the side shoots for more stems and more growth. Prime harvest time is when the fiberoptic wands have a perfect green base fading into a deep purple color at the wispy tips. |
Pinching | No |
When to Plant if you are NOT in Zone 5 | After all danger of frost has passed |
Post Harvest Care | Room temp water with flower food. Take off all of the leaves and foliage. Leaves and foliage of any cut flower should never be submerged underwater because they decay quickly in water and cause a fast build up of bacteria. |
Diseases / Insects | Not very susceptible to disease or pests |
Sweet Pea’s Notes | Great filler flower for spring bouquets. Personally, I like leaving the blooms intact even after they are spent to harvest for dried uses later. |
Vase Life | 10-14 days |
